Did You Know?

It is usually during wintertime that we gain weight, and that we get flu.  What can you do to ensure that you don’t gain weight this winter, while still providing your body with the necessary nutrients to keep your immune system in top form to ward of infections?

Winter weight gain is mostly due to the fact that warm, ‘comfort’ foods are so much more attractive in colder weather.

This winter, follow one of these sets of guidelines to either gain weight or to stay in shape. The choice is yours.

Eat fish at least twice a week.  Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have a cholesterol-lowering effect. Fish generally also provides fewer calories than red meat:

Eat 'complex' carbohydrates, like fruit, vegetables. The water and fibre content of fruit and vegetables gives one a sense of fullness, while providing a relatively small amount of calories. By substituting fatty foods with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, you're guaranteed to maintain a healthy weight.

Use baking, poaching, steaming or grilling as cooking methods - these require no added oil. If you have to use a drop of oil, rather use olive or canola than sunflower oil. These oils contain less saturated fat, making it a better option in terms of heart health.

Eat a few marshmallows or a handful of dried fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth. Rather bake your own cookies and halve the amount of sugar. Drink tea or coffee, which contains fat-free milk and sweeteners, or drink low-fat hot chocolate.

Did You Know ?

That pumpkin is full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants?  And since pumpkin keeps for 6 months whole or for years in a can, it can be a year-round addition to our diets.

You can tell by its bright color that it’s going to be good for you. Not only is pumpkin loaded with vitamin A and antioxidant carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta-carotenes, it’s a good source of vitamins C, K, and E, and lots of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and iron.

Half a cup of canned pumpkin has 6.5 grams of effective carbohydrate and 3.5 grams of fiber.

The seeds are also worth latching on to. Pumpkin seeds, also called pepitas, are loaded with minerals, seem to have an anti-inflammatory effect, and may even help protect against prostate cancer and osteoporosis. A quarter cup has about 5 grams of effective carb and 1.5 grams of fiber.

Teen Skin Care

You're moody. Your body is changing and acting weird. Your face is breaking out. Is it the end of the world? No! It's puberty

Acne is by far the most common skin complaint among teenagers.

You might think that a bad diet and stress are huge contributors to acne breakouts. Not true. Experts say ordinary day-to-day stress is not an important factor. And, while eating a balanced diet always makes sense, scientific studies haven't found a connection between a diet and acne. Even so, if avoiding chocolate, hot chips, or other food seems to keep your acne at bay, then doctors say it's a good idea to avoid them.

Cleanse your face gently a couple of times a day to remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells. Because acne is caused by oily buildup, not dirt, scrubbing won't help control blemishes and can actually irritate the skin and further inflame pimples.

The problem with picking and popping

Ever since our first pimple, we were told to not pick our face. But trying not to pick or pop a pimple is as effective as keeping a kid out of a candy store. When we see a blemish emerging, our first instinct is to get our index fingers ready for action.

What a lot of us don't realize is that squeezing these little guys can actually bring about much more damage and there could even be an indented scar in your future.

Cool Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Cool Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter. . . .  the days get shorter and the nights get colder, even the best of us can get a little down. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to both prevent the blues from coming on and get yourself back to normal if they’re already here.

  • Exercise
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get some sun
  • Act on your resolutions
  • Avoid binge drinking - drink more water
  • Treat yourself to a massage
  • Relax! Attend a yoga or pilates class
  • Embrace the season - take up a winter sport
  • Curl up with a good book
  • Catch some Zzzz’s

Seeing winter in a positive light, with all the fun activities that it has to offer, will keep your spirits high.

Most people know that sunlight provides us with Vitamin D. But did you know that it also improves your mood?  Lack of sunlight can cause many people to become depressed—without knowing why! Similar to exercise, sunlight exposure releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood.  Try to spend a little more time outdoors.  Keep your shades up during the day to let more light in.

When skin becomes dry & irritated, eczema can flare

When skin becomes dry & irritated, eczema can flare

The low humidity during winter can cause dry, irritated skin. Here are some tips to help skin feel more comfortable during winter or anytime the air is dry.

Use a humidifier
With the heat on and the windows closed, the air inside can become very dry in the winter, making the dryness and itching of eczema even worse. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. Placing two or three of these around your home will help to humidify the dry air. This can keep skin from drying and becoming cracked and itchy

  • Reduce stress

How can eczema be treated?

How can eczema be treated?

One of the most important components of an eczema treatment routine is to prevent scratching.  Because eczema is usually dry and itchy, the most common treatment is the application of lotions or creams to keep the skin as moist as possible.  These treatments are generally most effective when applied directly after bathing (within three minutes is a common recommendation) so that the moisture from the bath is "locked in."

Gently introduce teens to a lifetime of great skincare
